On June 6, 1944, 4,415 men died so that freedom wouldn’t. The Allied Forces of World War II wrote the most important story of the last century. - the decisive battle that foreshadowed the end of Hitler’s dream of Nazi domination. This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today.
Freedom is not free. It has been paid for by the courage, devotion, and ultimate sacrifice of America’s heroes.
As we gather with family and friends, let us never forget those who stood for this Republic and gave everything For God and Country.

Beginning in 1942, as an increasing number of American men were recruited for the war effort, some five million civilian women joined forces with women in uniform to work in factories, electronics, etc., supporting the American war effort. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
Early on Feb. 3, 1943, an enemy torpedo struck the Army transport Dorchester as it carried 902 officers and enlisted men, Navy armed guard, merchant seamen and civilian workers in the North Atlantic. The Coast Guard cutter escorts Comanche and Escanaba rescued 230 men.

As Dorchester took on water, four Army chaplains – Lt. George L. Fox (Methodist), Lt. Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lt. John P. Washington (Roman Catholic), and Lt. Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed) – calmed frightened soldiers, aided the wounded and guided the disoriented toward safety.

On deck, they opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. When there were no more available, the chaplains removed their life jackets and gave them to four young men. “It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven,” said John Ladd, a survivor.

As the ship went down, men in rafts saw the four chaplains, arms linked and braced against the slanting deck, singing hymns and praying.

Congress attempted to confer the Medal of Honor on the chaplains but was prevented by strict requirements of heroism under fire. It authorized a one-time posthumous Special Medal for Heroism, awarded by President Eisenhower in 1961; it was intended to have the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor.

𝐀𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫, 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 ......𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞. We face east, saluting those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, honoring the dawn of peace that followed the guns’ silence in 1918.
Today, and every day, we give our deepest gratitude to all who have served in our Armed Forces. Your courage and sacrifice defend the freedoms we hold dear.
As we remember the fallen, let us renew our national promise — to care for our veterans and their families, who have given so much so that we may live free.
