Our Mission

Proud possessors of a priceless heritage, we male descendants of veterans of all Wars, associate ourselves together as “Sons of The American Legion” for the following purposes:

  • To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;

  • to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism;

  • to preserve the memories of our former members and the associations of our members
    and our forefathers in all Wars;

  • to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the Community, State and Nation;

  • to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;

  • to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth;

  • to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;

  • to consecrate and sanctify our friendship, by our devotion to mutual helpfulness;

  • to adopt in letter and spirit, all of the great principles for which The American Legion stands;

  • and to assist in carrying on for God and Country.

Our History

The Sons of The American Legion was born during the 1930’s in the midst of the Great Depression. The establishment of The Sons of The American Legion as a non-profit, non-sectarian civilian organization, was authorized by action of The American Legion’s 14th National Convention in Portland Oregon; September 12-15, 1932. The 1933 National Convention officially changed the name of the Organization to “The Sons of The American Legion”, authorized use of the abbreviation “S.A.L.” (pronounced S-A-L, not “sal”), and levied an annual membership dues of 25 cents.

The Sons of The American Legion has been defined as a legal, self-sustaining program of The American Legion, authorized by resolution. The National Constitution of The Sons of The American Legion provides for finances and revenues derived from annual membership dues.

The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, officially recognizes the organization known as The Sons of The American Legion, in its Constitution and By-Laws.

The Sons of The American Legion Squadrons are organized under the jurisdiction of the Local Post of The American Legion, and bear the name and number of the Post. Those who desire to form a Squadron can apply for a charter to the local Post of The American Legion in the area in which they reside. The minimum membership for the formation of a Squadron is ten members.
