Procession and Ceremony Planned for WWII Pilot 1st Lt. Roy C. Harms  Roy C. Harms, age 26, of Grafton, was killed on Sunday, August 1, 1943 in the attack on the Ploesti oil fields of Romania in WWII. Lt. Harms a pilot of a B-24 bomber, along with eight of his crew, was killed when the aircraft was shot down. Harms was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Purple Heart as well as other medals.

 Born on August 24, 1916, he graduated from Grafton School District High School in 1934 and was Grafton’s first Eagle Scout. In his honor, he shares the name of the Rose-Harms Legion Post 355 Grafton, WI with WWI soldier CPL Fred Rose.

 After almost eighty years, the recently identified remains of Lt. Harms will return to Grafton for burial on Saturday, May 6, at the Woodlawn Cemetery on 3rd Ave. in Grafton. He will be interred alongside his parents at a noon ceremony with full military honors.

 The public is invited to stand in silence along North St. between 12th and 3rd Avenues at 11:15 a.m. to pay their respects to this local hero and follow the procession to the cemetery. All residents and businesses in Grafton are encouraged to display a flag on this day.

 Military organizations (Legion Posts other than Grafton, VFW etc.) and service organizations (First responders, Lions Club, law enforcement, etc.) in uniform are asked to line the driveway into the cemetery.

 Special accommodations will be made for WWII veterans at the ceremony. These veterans should make their intentions to attend known to the Ozaukee County Historical Society by calling 262-377-4510.
